At the Academy Awards, talk of plastic surgery usually can be heard in whispers about who has had what kind of “work “done. But London surgeon Mohammad Jawad will be walking the red carpet at the Oscars as the subject of a moving documentary called Saving Face.
Dr Jawad makes periodic trips to his native Pakistan to treat victims of acid attacks, mostly due to domestic abuse. “Doing this kind of work, I feel I’m trying to restore the trust and build the confidence of ordinary people that plastic surgery is a very noble and gifted profession”, explains Dr Jawad. During some of those trips, American film-maker Daniel Junge has documented Dr Jawad’s work.
Saving Face will be premiered in Britain as part of the Human Rights Watch Film.
