Some new Smartphone apps, designed to help the user determine if their skin lesions are benign or malignant, are far from smart!
Several were recently evaluated for accuracy in a well designed medical study. “Three apps that relied on computer analysis comparing smartphone pictures to a database of biopsy-proven melanomas were studied and had appallingly low sensitivities in detecting melanoma, ranging from 7 to 70%,” says noted dermatologist, Dr. Neil Schultz.
Think about this for a moment. That mean that an app with 7% sensitivity missed 93% of the melanomas, calling them benign! Apps with 70% missed 30% of the melanomas.
Sometimes you can be a lot smarter without your SmartPhone.
