TANNING BEDS, SUNSHINE, AIRBRUSH TANNING & VITAMIN D

Most of us avoid basking in the sun these days, the culprit of both deadly melanoma skin cancer, as well as aging skin (premature lines, wrinkles and brown spots). Without regular sun exposure,  many of us become vitamin D deficient.

The quick fix for this: Vitamin D supplements.

Others are simply  sun worshippers seduced by tanning beds, thinking they are a quick fix to a dazzling golden tan without the dangers wrought by direct sunlight exposure. But beware. Know the facts. The UV bulbs used in tanning salons are almost all UVA, which make no Vitamin D. You need UVB light to make Vitamin D, but tanning salons don’t use them because besides making Vitamin D, they cause sun burns. Furthermore, regular use of tanning beds makes you as prone to all the types of skin damage as from direct sunlight.

Maybe we should just settle for bronze glow makeup.

Or for those committed to a more lasting effect, Airbrush Sunless Tanning could be a good  alternative .

These are safe choices. Either way, your body might need those Vitamin D supplements. Check with your physician.

  1. custom airbrush tanning is great way to stay out of the sun and have a perfect tan year round. just make sure a non-toxic product tan is used and use a medical grade sunblock with the tan as a great way to block uva and uvb rays….Only spend 20 minutes a day in direct sun.

  2. Great input on sun and Vitamin D. I’d like to add one important note on tanning beds: UVA rays – from the sun or bulbs – are responsible for skin aging through damage to basal cells, also they cause sun allergy and alteration of DNA and hence increasing the risk of skin cancer.

  3. Indoor tanning is an environment that can be controlled. Both tanning beds and the sun give off ultra violet light, but as in the case of tanning beds, the C light waves which is considered to be most damaging are filtered. In addition, tanning bulbs emit UVA and UVB in which excessive exposure can be risky, that is why precisely tanning beds are considered safer because exposure can be controlled. `
